DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF PAPERS EXTENDED TO 15 JUNE 2018 at 12 noon.

 

Conference title: Breaking barriers – Contemporary use, models and allocation of ISBN across the world.

The National Book Council, in collaboration with Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies and Logos, will be hosting an open conference with a list of speakers on the subject of the ISBN.

Librarians, academics, ISBN agencies and students are invited to submit their papers on subjects relating to this topic. The best papers will be published in a special edition of the premier publishing journal Logos, published by Brill.

Themes of the conference are:

  • Current models used by ISBN agencies on ISBN allocation.
  • Use of ISBN in libraries.
  • Use of ISBN in public entities and cultural institutions.
  • Use and models of ISBN in the commercial sector.
  • The challenges of ISBN as a universal standard in the wake of new standards by online giant Amazon.
  • Scientific models of ISBN serialization.
  • Collection, storage and distribution of ISBN metadata.
  • The value of publishing statistics such as the ISBN.

The conference will be held at the Palace Hotel, Sliema, Malta, on Saturday 22 September 2018. Individual presentations during the conference will last 20 minutes.

Proposals should be sent by 30 May 2018 to Simona Cassano (simona.cassano@gov.mt) with the subject line ‘ISBN pre-conference 2018 <APPLICANT NAME>’. They should be of around 250 words and should be sent together with a short (100-word) biography of the participant/s. Individual presentations on the day of the conference will last 20 minutes.

Details of the conference and list of speakers will be issued by 30 June 2018. The conference is free of charge and will be open to the public.

The conference will also be attended by the Executive Director of the IIA Stella Griffiths and its Operations Manager Nick Woods who will also be giving their own presentations.
