Paul Caruana

Wrinkles, Paul's first book, began as a series of stories about a boy's adventures growing up in Valletta during the 1960s and early 1970s. As the writing progressed, he realised that he was in fact recounting his own childhood memories, drawing on his experiences of growing up in Valletta and visiting relatives in Rabat and Mdina.

Born in 1960 and raised in Valletta, Paul has been accompanied by art throughout his life. His first teacher was his late father, who was also a perceptive critic, and watercolour painting has remained his passion since early childhood.

Through Wrinkles—its stories and accompanying watercolour paintings—Paul seeks to share a deeply personal journey and the experiences of a bygone era. Looking back, he sees those years as almost fairy-tale-like: a time when growing up and playing with friends in the streets was a priceless luxury that no amount of money could buy.
