Adrian Stivala (trad.)

Adrian Stivala was born in Rabat in 1950 and graduated in Italian: B.A. (Hons.) (1973), M.A. (1975) and P.G.C. (Educ.) at the University of Malta. He holds a Diploma in Italian Literature from the University of Florence (1973) and a Diploma in the Pedagogy of the Italian Language from the University of Perugia (1978). Between 1973 and 2014 he taught Italian in Malta. In 2001 he obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Malta. For many years he was an active member of the Associazione Internazionale Professori d’Italiano (AIPI), organizing and taking part in conferences in Italy and the United States. From 1980 onward he served as a cultural correspondent for various Maltese newspapers and magazines. He published Contemporary Maltese Artists (North Star Publications, 1980) and It-Triq tal-Qawmien (PBS Publications, 1996). He translated works by Edoardo de Filippo and other authors into Maltese. In 2025 he published Isem il-Warda (Klabb Kotba Maltin, 2025), a translation of Il Nome della Rosa that was included in the Umberto Eco section of the Library of the University of Bologna. He is currently translating Karl Schembri’s novel Eħlisna Mid-Deni into Italian for publication, with the assistance of the Maltese Book Fund. He strongly believes in the importance of translation.
