Dr Charlene Vella is an authority on Renaissance art and architecture in Malta. In her recent book, In the footsteps of Antonello da Messina: The Antonelliani between Sicily and Venice, she faithfully follows the work of brothers Saliba from Veneto to Malta, and to every Sicilian hilltop town that commissioned their work. This study speaks to broader debates on mobility, migration and artistic exchange, while revealing how Antonello’s artistic legacy and his family’s exposure to Venice nurtured a neglected Renaissance of painting in Sicily, Calabria and Malta.
