Like every year, the National Book Council prepared a small gift for everyone on Christmas day. This year it was decided to publish an aphorism written by Manwel Dimech, who was born on 25 December 1860.

We thought it would be very good timing to remember the man who struggled with all this heart for the Maltese people to be independent, first and foremost intellectually. In this phase of political turmoil, which is outrageous for Malta and its leaders, the cry of the Maltese people makes Dimech’s voice as alive and apt as ever.
