Widely regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary Maltese literature, he has published numerous books that have received critical acclaim and have been translated into several languages. In 2011 he was awarded the European Union Prize for Literature, bringing his writing to an international readership. His work has appeared in literary journals and anthologies across Europe and beyond, and has been presented at major international literary festivals. In recognition of his contribution to literature and culture, he was awarded the National Order of Merit by the Republic of Malta and honoured as poet Laureate by the International Chapter of the European Medal of Poetry and Art Homer.
