The National Book Council (NBC) today unveils the poster for the 2025 edition of the Malta Book Festival (MBF ’25) – taking place at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre, Ta’ Qali between 5-9 November under the banner of writing anew

This slogan signals the power of books and literature to both run on and evoke change and metamorphosis, and the festival – now in its 46th consecutive year – seeks to embody that same spirit of freshness and renewal.

Its poster – designed by Angele Azzopardi of UNGL Studio and featuring photographs by Jacob Sammut – is certainly no exception to this approach. Riding on the wave of the bold and fresh visual identity, the decision to opt for photography instead of illustration also marks a departure from how the Festival was presented to the public in previous years.

“Given that the theme of this year’s Festival is all about the refreshing power of transformation, we wanted to make sure that the poster – in many ways the culmination of its visual identity – reflects this,” National Book Council Executive Chairperson Mark Camilleri said.

“We’ve been fortunate to work with some of Malta’s finest illustrators over the years, who have given us truly striking and memorable posters that very much live up the Festival as the leading celebration of book culture in Malta. Now, we’re thrilled to be able to add photographers into the mix, and for our graphic designers to continue to work in tandem with them to provide a cohesive yet exciting stamp to the event,” Camilleri added.

The photographs that feature on the poster will also form the basis of the Malta Book Festival ’25 promotional trailer, in which the theme of writing anew will be brought to life in a charming micro-narrative. The trailer will be released in early September, and will subsequently form the backbone of the NBC’s dynamic marketing campaign for the event, which will see the MBF ’25 promoted widely across strategic spots on the island.

With the poster now out in the world, the NBC is excited to unveil more details of the Festival in the coming weeks – most immediately, the announcement of the first international special guest at the MBF ’25, on 24 June.
