The National Book Council (NBC) is thrilled to unveil the logo and tagline for this year’s edition of the Malta Book Festival — taking place between 5-9 November at the Malta Fairs and Conventions Centre (MFCC), Ta’ Qali. 

Hot on the heels of its recent rebranding exercise, the NBC was empowered to opt for a bold new direction for the 2025 edition of Malta’s leading literary event, with a festival that will take change and transformation as its core theme… as embodied in both its design and its slogan: writing anew

The theme was chosen because quite simply, every literary endeavour is a metamorphic process, whether it entails transforming life into words on a page or translating a work of literature into a different artistic language. 

All books deal with or express change of some kind — whether through the propulsive movement of a gripping narrative, the detailing of an historical moment (be it intimate or wide-ranging) down to all the ever-shifting forms of expression which unfold throughout the course of a variety of genres: from poetry to picture books and beyond, the journey of change grips us and keeps us guessing as we turn the pages. 

And it is precisely this spirit of dynamic renewal that animates the visual identity of this year’s Festival. 

“A long-running event like the Malta Book Festival has the unique privilege of being a fixture of the country’s cultural calendar, while also keeping us on our toes to make sure it feels new every single time,” National Book Council Chairman Mark Camilleri said. “Maintaining a fresh approach to the event — both in terms of its content and its presentation — is key, and the message that this year’s event will be ‘writing anew’ is a powerful, resonant and above all, exciting note to launch the event’s overarching visual identity,” Camilleri added. 

This year, the NBC is proud to collaborate with Angele Azzopardi of UNGL Studio to usher in a striking design that will clearly distinguish this year’s edition from previous iterations. 

“The visual identity for this year’s Malta Book Festival centres around a custom-designed logomark, featuring sharp, elongated letterforms inspired by the angular shapes of shelved and open books,” Azzopardi explained, adding that “this experimentation with angles and condensed typography creates the illusion of books standing side by side, reinforcing the literary essence of the festival”. 

The result is a versatile logo that can be easily adapted across a wide range of marketing collateral, further complemented by an eight-colour playful and bold palette designed to inject more life into the identity. This visual direction allows for a high degree of flexibility and dynamic visual combinations, which is perfectly in line with the strong, modular approach of this year’s festival. 

“Azzopardi’s design hits the sweet spot of minimalist and flexible, so the sky’s the limit when it comes to its implementation,” Camilleri said. “As we continue to put together our packed programme of events for the Festival, we’re equally excited to imagine how it will all be enhanced by this vibrant visual direction,” he added.
