The National Book Council (NBC) presented a sizeable donation of books to Mount Carmel Hospital, to be enjoyed by around 20 patients occupying the newly-inaugurated ward in the hospital’s Block 1.

The donation was presented by NBC Executive Chairperson Mark Camilleri and Manager Sephora Francalanza to nurse Sarah Abela, who is in charge of the ward.

The selection of books includes previous winners of the National Book Prize and Terramaxka Prize, along with shortlistees of those same prizes and other books published on the island, both in Maltese and English.

The books span various genres, including novels, short story collections, poetry and drama, as well as biographies and volumes on history. Having such a varied selection ensures that all patients are catered to, as their ages range from 18 to 65.

The donation to Mount Carmel follows from an earlier presentation of books to Malta Libraries – an annual tradition which ensures that public libraries are stocked with high-quality and award-winning books from Malta’s publishers. Such donations play a crucial role in ensuring that books remain accessible to all sectors of society.

With this in mind, the NBC strongly believes that books can serve as yet another stage in the process of recovery – not just for residents at the hospital, but for the population at large.
