Illustrated by talented and beloved artist Ed Dingli, the poster is a stunning visual representation of #bindingworlds, the theme and tagline for this year’s edition of Malta’s largest celebration of book culture. “At the National Book Council, the book is at the core of everything we do — from supporting authors, publishers and everyone involved in the book-making process, to organizing large-scale public events like our most cherished event, the Malta Book Festival, which connects readers with the vibrant world of books,” said Simona Cassano, Festival Director. “Ed Dingli’s striking poster highlights the craft and dedication behind every book — from the many hands that bring it to life, to the wide variety of readers it inspires and engages. The Festival creates a unique space where these elements converge, offering visitors an intimate look at the creative journey that begins with the maker and ends with the reader,” Cassano added. Enlivened by the artist’s signature approach — which succeeds in being both playful and geometrically meticulous —Dingli’s elegant visual style allows for a tasteful combination of elements that cogently express the festival’s eclectic programme, hinting at the element of exploration and a leap into the unknown as readers crack open a fresh volume, the craft of writing and the creation of the book as a physical object and the book’s ability to inform various art forms and media, while also appealing to various demographics. In this way, the poster expresses all four ‘worlds’ that will be bound together at the Malta Book Festival next November. The Festival will be: An Author Spotlight – Delve into the Literary Universe of star authors, both local and international. Attendees are invited into their literary universes to explore acclaimed works. A Book Engagement Zone – The Festival promises an immersive experience for all, with interactive workshops, captivating theatre shows and activities tailored for young readers and school audiences. A Creative Bookmaking Lab – Hands-on experiences, activities and events also invite attendees to immerse themselves in the art of bookmaking and creative expression. A Genre Celebration Hub – The Festival will showcase various book genres and types, catering to readers of all interests and preferences and celebrating the diverse spectrum of literature. Many of the elements that make up the final poster were teased over the past few weeks in an ongoing campaign leading up to the Festival, a credit to the clever modular approach by Ed Dingli and the efforts of the Festival’s graphic designer Sarah Cachia Falzon. The artwork will also form the basis of an engaging animated video trailer, created by Kyle Xuereb Cunningham following an open call and to be released in the coming days.
