The National Book Council (NBC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sandra Hili Vassallo as its new Executive Director, following the departure of Simona Cassano in May 2025.

A lawyer by training, Hili Vassallo brings with her a wealth of experience in diplomacy, policy, and the cultural sector. She has previously served as a diplomat at Malta’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and as a director within the Ministry for the Family, Social Policy and Children’s Rights, and the Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government. A published author of several award-winning children’s books and short stories, she is also a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta and an advocate for social justice and environmental causes.

“We are delighted to welcome Sandra Hili Vassallo as Executive Director,” National Book Council Executive Chairperson Mark Camilleri said. “Sandra combines a deep love for literature with long-standing leadership experience in the public sector. Her interdisciplinary background, strong values, and proven commitment to cultural development make her ideally placed to guide the Council through its next chapter.”

Camilleri also expressed his thanks to outgoing Executive Director Simona Cassano, who stepped down in May after eight years at the Council. “Simona led with professionalism, vision, and heart. Her contributions – particularly in developing strategic partnerships and expanding the Council’s outreach – leave a lasting legacy.”

Sandra Hili Vassallo will begin her tenure this July. She joins the Council at a pivotal moment, as the NBC prepares to launch and commence the implementation of its Five-Year Strategic Vision for 2025-2030.
