The National Book Council (NBC) is deeply saddened by the death of Alfred Palma, a writer and translator who was a prominent figure of the Maltese literary scene.

Palma translated several of Shakespeare’s works into Maltese and, in 2021, published his translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia (Klabb Kotba Maltin). This work, which took him many years to complete, was highly praised by literary critics, readers, and even by the adjudicators of the National Book Prize.

Among other honours, Palma won the National Book Prize six times, mainly for his translations, including the Special Prize for an Outstanding Contribution to Literature. In 2009, he was awarded the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika for his contribution to the literary field, and two years ago he was bestowed with the title of Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia, by decree signed by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

The National Book Council extends its condolences to the family members, friends, and readers of Alfred Palma.
