In this novel, the story slips from page to page, following Andrei, a man living in a small town, through his obsessions and persistent doubts. Against everyone’s advice, Andrei always chooses the riskiest path, throwing himself into work and into questions that refuse to let him rest. The greatest of these concerns his daughter, who seems to have taken a vow of silence. Andrei is a disoriented father, an aggressive real estate agent whose greatest joy is work and the relentless pursuit of ever-rising sales targets. But there is only so much strain the human mind can endure.
