Literary Agent Simon Trewin offers free Zoom session to stakeholders News • News 26th May, 2025 The National Book Council is once again inviting all interested members of the Maltese publishing community to participate in an exclusive Zoom call with international literary agent Simon Trewin. Taking place on 30 May at 16:00, ‘Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Publishing Contracts… But Never Dared Ask’ will be a 90-minute session walking participants through a standard publishing contract on screen between an author and a publisher, explaining each clause and leaving plenty of time for questions. The session follows on from ‘The Rights Stuff’ which was offered last February. Using a real contract as a case study (shared on screen), Trewin will demystify the legal jargon and reveal the real-world implications behind the terms. You’ll learn: – What rights you’re giving up – and which ones you can keep – The difference between net receipts and cover price royalties – What options clauses mean for your future books – How reversion of rights really works – What’s reasonable to push back on – and how to do it A veteran of the UK publishing industry, Simon Trewin’s roster of authors have been translated in 60 different languages, and feature among their number the likes of John Boyne and Booker winner Paul Lynch. Owing to his long-standing collaboration with the National Book Council, Trewin is also a literary ambassador for Malta. The meeting will be recorded and archived as a transcript that attendees will be able to access. Participation to the event is free, but registration is required through this form. Participants wishing to put any questions to Trewin are kindly asked to input their question in the relevant field of the form.
