Animated for the second year running by the talented Kyle Xuereb Cunningham after illustrations by Ed Dingli and featuring a musical extract from the song Zoltan by Maltese singer-songwriter Kym Pepe, the video gives vibrant expression to the theme and tagline for this year’s festival: #bindingworlds. [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD375K3-y-8[/embedyt] The animation cherry-picks elements from each of the four ‘worlds’ that make up the Festival poster, which was unveiled last week. Illustrated by Ed Dingli, the poster visually collates all that the 2024 Malta Book Festival will be about: from hosting star authors and holding enriching workshops in both writing and other forms of book production, to creating a space where book lovers from all walks of life can find something to thrill to. Pages from books glide across lakes and mountainsides, sometimes serving as magic carpets for eager readers to be taken from one literary world to the next, while clouds meld into the smoke of a magically floating ship, signifying the unique ability of literature to transport us to places we would not otherwise be able to inhabit… you’ll find all this and more in the video we’re proud to unveil. “Now something of a tradition for the NBC, these videos are more than just a piece of promotional material for the Malta Book Festival – they are works of art in their own right,” Festival director Simona Cassano said. “They are crafted with the aid of some of our talented stakeholders following an open call, based on a brief that emphasises both creativity and a keen understanding of the overarching theme for this year’s edition of the Festival,” Cassano added, while also stressing that the theme of #bindingworlds gives plenty of leeway for creative interpretation that the artists embraced wholeheartedly. “The video itself is a perfect example of this in action: bringing in both an illustrator and a motion artist to craft a video that draws its inspiration from the literary culture at the centre of the Malta Book Festival,” Cassano concluded.
