Publishers and authors are to note that a new application form for ISBNs has been drawn up and has been uploaded on our ISBN page here. The updated version introduces a new caption: Product Format, which requires those applying for an ISBN to specify the format of the file in case of an E-book. The reason for this is that ISBNs identify uniquely not the content of a work but the publication itself. In other words two different format E-books of the same literary work will have two different ISBNs.

Since the question of file format can only arise within the context of E-books, the caption can be ignored by those applying for an ISBN for a non-eletronic publication. Any questions or difficulties regarding the updated version of the ISBN application can be addressed to Mr John Grech on john.f.grech@gov.mt or Mr. Joe Debattista at joe.debattista@gov.mt.
